MONTREAL (CP) Andrea Bargnani bounced
back strong from his latest calf injury.
Bargnani scored 20 points and the
Toronto Raptors beat the New York Knicks
107-88 in pre-season action Friday night
before a sold-out Bell Centre crowd.
Bargnani, who was limited to 31 games
last season because of calf strains, was
back in the Raptors' starting lineup
after he was hurt his left calf once
again Wednesday. He suffered a bruised
calf and left in the third quarter of
Toronto's 104-101 win over Washington.
``Last game that was really just a hit,
a hard hit on the calf, so we just
decided it wasn't worth it to keep
playing limping,'' Bargnani said. ``So I
took some therapy but it's nothing like
last year.''
Toronto won its third in a row to
improve to 4-1, while dealing New York
its first loss in three exhibition games
in front of a lively crowd of 22,144.
``I want to say one thing about the fans
here, I don't know if we can bottle it
up and take it back to Toronto but they
were exciting fans, great fans, packed
house, guys on the sideline were yelling
at the referees and getting on them, and
it felt like we were in an NBA city,''
Raptors coach Dwayne Casey said. ``A
great arena, great building, hot
building, and it was good for our guys
to give them a hard-fought game.''
The Raptors outscored New York 30-20 in
the third quarter and went up by 12
after Jose Calderon scored on a layup
off a turnover 2:27 into the fourth to
make it 84-72.
Kyle Lowry finished with 17 points for
Toronto and Amir Johnson contributed 14.
Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 24
points. Amar'e Stoudamire had 18 points
in his pre-season debut after missing
New York's first two games because of
pain in his left knee.

TORONTO (CP) When Landry Fields darted
along the baseline to the basket, Kyle
Lowry managed to find him.
Lowry played with hustle and poise in
his Raptors debut and combined with
Fields like they were longtime teammates
on Wednesday in Toronto's 104-101
pre-season victory over the Washington
Wizards.
``(Lowry) has sea legs right now and it
affected his shot, but you can see he's
a rolling pin going to the basket, he
gets to where he wants to go with the
ball, he's heady, he sees things that
other people don't see, he got Landry
going, cutting moving off the ball,
which was huge,'' said Raptors coach
Dwane Casey. ``Those things you can't
teach. He's a true leader.''
Fields scored 15 points while Lowry had
14 of his own to go along with six
assists.
Amir Johnson added 13 points, Jose
Calderon had 12 points and eight
assists, and DeMar DeRozan added 11
points for the Raptors (3-1).
Trevor Booker had 12 points to top the
Wizards (1-4), while Emeka Okafor,
Martell Webster, Jan Vesely and Bradley
Beal had 11 apiece.
The Raptors trailed 77-73 heading into
the fourth quarter of a game that had
seen 15 lead changes.
Toronto managed to build a three-point
lead with a minute left in the game and
led by a point when Lowry drained two
free throws with 13 seconds left to seal
it.
Lowry started after missing the first
three games of the exhibition schedule
-- and a good chunk of Toronto's
training camp in Halifax -- with a groin
injury.
Casey had said that Lowry needed to
shake off the rust. But the point guard
scored the Raptors' first points off a
steal and drive to the hoop, and didn't
slow down, in front of a crowd of 11,750
that included Jon Bon Jovi and former
Raptor Tracy Murray.

TORONTO (CP) Toronto rookie Jonas
Valanciunas was a big bright spot on an
otherwise messy night that left Raptors
coach Dwane Casey issuing an apology to
Dr. James Naismith.
And that's good news for a team that has
pegged the young Lithuanian centre as a
big piece of the future of the
franchise.
DeMar DeRozan scored 14 points while Ed
Davis had 12 in the Raptors' 82-75
pre-season victory over the Detroit
Pistons on Friday.
But almost all eyes were on Valanciunas,
who had 11 points and eight rebounds,
and scored on a key possession with less
than a minute to play, in just his
second NBA game.
``I'm happy, I'm happy because we won
the game,'' the rookie said afterward.
``I like the crowd, how they support us,
that was wonderful. That was a great day
for me.''
Rodney Stuckey topped the Pistons with
14 points, while Vyacheslav Kravstov had
10.
Valanciunas, who the Raptors selected
with their No. 5 in the 2011 NBA draft,
put in an energetic 29 minutes, banging
with Detroit's big men under the glass.
On one play late in the first quarter,
the rookie did a nice job of driving to
the hoop and drawing a foul for a
three-point play.
Then with 48 seconds left in the game,
and the Raptors up by three, Valanciunas
drove to the basket and finished with a
pretty hook shot.
When a reported jokingly asked if he had
recently perfected that move, the
Lithuanian smiled and said: ``Yeah. This
morning.''
``I thought it was a good run by Jonas,
he came in and battled, competing in the
paint, had some good offensive moves,''
said Casey.
The Raptors never led by more than 10
points on a sloppy night indicative of
pre-season basketball. Casey issued an
apology to Naismith in the post-game
news conference saying:
``I apologize for our display. But I

Jose CalderonOctober 8, 2012
TORONTO (CP) - When Terrence Ross threw
up an air ball on a three-point attempt
in his first few minutes on the floor,
it looked like a long night could be in
store for the Toronto Raptors’ rookie.
But it was just a blip in an otherwise
strong NBA debut Monday as Ross and the
Raptors won their preseason opener,
102-95 over Spain’s Real Madrid.
“Other than that I felt comfortable, I
wasn’t nervous or in a rush, I just
calmed myself down, got myself
together,” Ross said. “It wasn’t
too bad.”
DeMar DeRozan scored 18 points and John
Lucas added 16 of his own for the
Raptors, who ended the third quarter up
by two before pulling away in the
fourth.
Andrea Bargnani had 14 points, Amir
Johnson added 12 points, scoring on
several big dunks, Jose Calderon had
eight assists to go with nine points,
and Ed Davis grabbed 10 rebounds.
Ross, the Raptors’ No. 8 pick out of
Washington, scored 10 points in 22
minutes, calmly knocking down a pair of
threes.
Raptors coach Dwane Casey was pleased
with the 21-year-old’s first NBA game.
“There was that one casual play where
he thought he was in the park by
himself, and [former NBA player Rudy]
Fernandez came from behind and got him
... just little things like that,”
Casey said. “But his upside is off the
charts.”
Ross said the speed and intensity of the
game is different from what he faced at
the college level.
“Most of the guys are veterans,
they’ve been playing this for a long
time, so it’s a lot different from
college kids to grown men,” he said.
“You’ve got to be a second quicker
[getting your shot off], you’ve always
got to do something a little better,
jump a little higher, get a little more
arc.”
While it was only the pre-season, Ross
said the moment he put on his jersey
before the game wasn’t lost on him.

TORONTO (CP) The Toronto Raptors wrapped
up another campaign to forget with a
victory on Thursday -- something they
couldn't get nearly enough of when it
mattered this season.
Ben Uzoh recorded Toronto's first
triple-double in 11 years in the battle
between bench players, with 12 points,
12 assists and 11 rebounds as the
Raptors beat the New Jersey Nets 98-67.
Solomon Alabi had 11 points and 19
boards for his first double-double,
while Ed Davis scored a career high 24
points.
Now the Raptors (23-43) head into the
off-season to be playoff spectators for
the fourth year in a row.
Toronto native Jamaal Magloire took
centre-court for the traditional
season-ending shout-out to the fans, and
promised a post-season appearance next
year.
``We'd like to thank you guys for
hanging with us through thick and thin I
know it's been a turbulent year...''
Magloire said. ``I promise you we will
get better... thank you from the bottom
of our hearts, and continue continue
continue to stick with us because we are
going to improve and we are going to
make the playoffs next year.''
Anthony Morrow and Armon Johnson scored
11 points apiece to top the Nets
(22-44), who finished last in the
Atlantic Division, one spot below
Toronto.
In a woeful finale between two teams
with nothing to play for but draft
lottery positioning, the Nets dressed
eight players while Toronto played just
seven. The same five Raptors played the
entire second half.
``I just thanked all the guys for their
effort,'' said Raptors coach Dwane
Casey. ``This game was meaningless, but
they came out and laid it on the line
and played for 48 minutes.''

MILWAUKEE (CP)In the end, there wasn't
anything Brandon Jennings, Monta Ellis
or anybody else could do to save the
Milwaukee Bucks' faint playoff hopes.
Not even winning.
Jennings scored 25 points in the Bucks'
92-86 victory over the Toronto Raptors
on Monday, but Milwaukee's post-season
fate had already been decided. The
Philadelphia 76ers beat the New Jersey
Nets earlier in the night, clinching the
Eastern Conference's final playoff spot
and eliminating the Bucks from
contention.
``I'm disappointed -- very
disappointed,'' Bucks coach Scott Skiles
said. ``We didn't get done what we were
expected to get done, so if everybody in
there is not very, very disappointed,
then we've got big problems.''
Ersan Ilyasova added 19 points and 15
rebounds for Milwaukee.
Ellis played despite an injury to his
shooting hand, scoring 17 points on
4-for-14 shooting.
Skiles said he wasn't sure how badly the
injury was bothering Ellis, but said the
guard left the bench and went to the
locker room with just over a minute left
in the game.
``He battled through it tonight,''
Skiles said. ``But with like a minute to
go, a minute-five, I guess, he said he
couldn't go any more so he went in the
locker room.''
James Johnson had 22 points and 13
rebounds for the Raptors, who have lost
four straight games.

the second quarter after he was called
for travelling and threw the ball down
the court in protest.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (CP) Ben Gordon gave
the Detroit Pistons a winning end to an
otherwise ugly game.
The Pistons shook off an awful first
half and Gordon scored seven of their
final eight points -- including the
go-ahead basket -- to hang on for a
76-73 victory over the Toronto Raptors
on Sunday night.
Gordon's three-pointer with less than
three minutes to play broke a 68-all tie
and he added four subsequent free throws
to keep Detroit ahead. He and rookie
Brandon Knight each scored 19 points to
help the Pistons end a two-game losing
streak.
``Obviously all game was pretty much an
ugly game,'' Gordon said. ``We just
stuck it out and tried to be more
persistent than they were.''
DeMar DeRozan had 16 to lead the
Raptors, who lost their third straight.
The Pistons couldn't celebrate the
victory until Linas Kleiza's wide-open
three-point attempt bounced off the rim
as time expired.
``LK had a great look at the end of the
game and that's all we can ask for,''
said Raptors coach Dwane Casey, who did
not play DeRozan in the final quarter to
give a handful of other players more
minutes as his team plays out the final
games of the season.
Alan Anderson had two chances to give
the Raptors the lead in the final 20
seconds but missed both shots.
Gordon's three-pointer capped a second

ties. Detroit turned 17 Raptors
turnovers into 18 points and shot 20 per

TORONTO (CP) LeBron James wants some
rest. He also wants to play.
For now, the desire to play seems to be
stronger. And his MVP candidacy may be a
beneficiary of that decision.
James scored 28 points before taking the
fourth quarter off, Mike Miller added 13
points and the Miami Heat continued
tuning up for the post-season by pulling
away in the second half to beat the
Toronto Raptors 96-72 on Wednesday
night.
The Raptors tied a franchise-worst with
23 points in the second half -- matching
what they managed in a first half
against Washington in 2003 -- and
Toronto coach Dwane Casey lauded Miami
afterward.
``They play the right way,'' Casey said.
``They have the star power to do it. My
hat's off to Miami. They're a great
team. I'm going to enjoy watching them.
I hope my guys were watching and
learning and that they learned from
tonight and how fast and how physical
the game is for 48 minutes. Not 24
minutes -- 48 minutes.''
James made 12 of his 15 shots for Miami,
which also got 10 points from Udonis
Haslem. The Heat -- who can now finish
no worse than No. 2 in the Eastern
Conference -- played without Dwyane Wade
and Chris Bosh, both given the night off
for what Miami calls ``maintenance'' of
some nagging aches and pains.
James Johnson scored 18 points, Alan
Anderson added 15 and DeMar DeRozan had
12 for Toronto, which fell for the sixth
time in eight games.
``First half we brought the fight to
them, let them know they were in a

the second half, different story. They
came out and brought the fight to us and
they brought it good.''

home-and-home series.
Teague torched the Raptors in the
pivotal third quarter, scoring eight
points and dishing out four helpers to
help Atlanta pull away. The Hawks
(36-25) cruised from there to remain
tied for fifth place in the Eastern
Conference with the Orlando Magic, who
defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 113-100
earlier Monday.
Ivan Johnson had a team-high 21 points
off the bench and Joe Johnson added 18
in the victory, which officially secured
the Hawks a post-season berth.
DeMar DeRozan led the way with 22 points
for the Raptors (22-40), who were
coming off impressive wins over Boston
and Atlanta and kept things close
Monday before being overwhelmed by a
healthier and more seasoned Hawks club.
Toronto was playing without four of its
veteran regulars, including leading
scorer Andrea Bargnani and starting
point guard Jose Calderon.
Raptors head coach Dwane Casey suggested
the demands of a condensed schedule,
and roster to match, may finally be
catching up with his team.
"Our disposition was a little different
(Monday) than it was (Sunday) for
reasons I don't know," Casey said. "I
thought we ran out of gas having a
shortened roster."

ATLANTA (CP) Long out of the playoff
race, the Toronto Raptors are now
playing the role of spoilers.
DeMar DeRozan scored 23 points and the
injury-riddled Raptors beat the Atlanta
Hawks 102-86 on Sunday night for their
second straight win over a playoff-bound
team.
Toronto coach Dwane Casey couldn't
explain when asked how his team was
managing to win now with three players
on 10-day contracts while stars Andrea
Bargnani, Jose Calderon and Jerryd
Bayless are on the injury list.
``Believe me, if I knew I'd bottle it
and we would've been doing it earlier in
the year,'' Casey said. ``Guys are just
playing the right way, playing together,
playing with a purpose. You've got guys
who don't want to go down without a
fight.''
Alan Anderson added 16 points for the
Raptors, who were coming off an 84-79
win against Boston on Friday. Ben Uzoh
and rookie Justin Dentmon scored 10
points each. Anderson, Uzoh and Dentmon
all have 10-day contracts that will
expire Monday, when the teams play in
Toronto.
Toronto, which shot 55 per cent (41 for
74) from the field, never trailed and
dealt Atlanta a big blow in its bid to
get the No. 3 seed in the Eastern
Conference.
``Very flat,'' said Hawks coach Larry
Drew. ``The energy level was very low.''
RAPTORS REMARKS

top teams in the NBA and we just came
out tonight and outperformed them. What
we’ve been fighting for all year is
consistency, and tonight we played the

TORONTO (CP) The Toronto Raptors want
DeMar DeRozan to assume the role of
fourth-quarter finisher.
He played the part Friday night,
shutting the door on one of the hottest
teams in the NBA.
DeRozan scored 13 of his game-high 22
points in the third quarter and added
four crucial free throws in the final 30
seconds as the short-handed Raptors
overcame a spirited Boston comeback on
the way to an 84-79 win over the
Celtics.
With Toronto's 15-point edge whittled
down to one, DeRozan drove baseline and
collided hard with Celtics forward Paul
Pierce, drawing the foul and nearly
making the shot. He buried both free
throws to put Toronto up three, then hit
two more on the next possession as the
Raptors (21-39) ended a four-game losing
skid.
``I just try to be aggressive,'' DeRozan
said. ``A couple plays I saw an
opportunity to get to the basket and I
did. I should have made it and had an
and-one ... but that's what it's all
about. Getting to the line and knocking
down your free throws.''
DeRozan has been challenged by Raptors
head coach Dwane Casey to take the ball
to the rim more often, using his
explosiveness off the dribble to
generate some much-needed offence for a
team sitting near the bottom of the NBA
in points per game. While he struggled
from the field against Boston --
shooting just 4-for-14 -- he made all 13
of his foul shots, highlighted by the
four that effectively put the game away.
``My shots weren't falling so I tried to
get some easy points, especially from
the free-throw line,'' he said.
Injuries to forward-centre Andrea
Bargnani (strained left calf, out for
season) and point guard Jose Calderon
(swollen right eye, day-to-day) left the
Raptors with NBA Development
League...
